Light and Shdows

The Flea Market at Monastiraki

This photo was taken during my latest trip to Athens.

The lighting condition was not very good with the bright, mid-day light and dark shadows on the street.

My camera setting was on aperture priority with "matrix" and the exposure time was 1/320. Usually, seeing a photo like this, I would try to find a balance between the brightest and darkest spots through editing.

However, after looking at it a few more seconds, I started to feel fortunate about getting a shot like this. There is almost no “dead” white and black space, with a random pattern of light and darkness instead and rich details.

I found this photo interesting because it captures the artistic side of daily life rather than simply documenting it.

And a similar photo below with the bright light and the shadows of the tree leaves.

Entering Chora Church in Istanbul.

When to use Matrix (Pattern, Evaluative) metering modes

Matrix, Pattern and Evaluative are considered good all-round metering modes. The camera sets the exposure automatically to suit the scene, taking into consideration both dark and light areas. It's considered good for evenly backlit subjects like portraiture and landscapes. It's also the way to go when you're not sure which metering mode to use. This is the reason why it's the default setting for fully automatic camera settings.
